Merrimore Chew Profile
Every dog chews differently. Our profile is designed to help you compare the physical characteristics of each product before choosing.
Dogs differ in size, dental condition, and chewing style. Merrimore's profile compares products by their physical texture and characteristics so you can choose more easily.
Ratings are for relative comparison between Merrimore products only. They do not represent actual chewing time and do not mean a product is suitable for every dog. All chew products should be used under supervision.
Hardness
Natural bone and hoof structure
Chew Duration
Designed for gradual chewing
Aroma
Natural animal aroma
Easy to Portion
Designed as a whole natural chew
Natural Variation
High natural variation
Good to know
A two-piece pack does not mean both pieces will look exactly the same. Goat Leg with Hoof is a natural whole-piece chew, not a moulded product, so differences in side-to-side shape, thickness, length, and hoof appearance are normal.
How to Read the Merrimore Chew Profile
Hardness
From softer treats to very firm natural chews.
Chew Duration
This reflects the relative amount of chewing a product usually requires, not how many minutes a dog will chew.
Aroma
This reflects the relative strength of the product's natural smell. A stronger smell does not mean better or worse quality.
Easy to Portion
The higher the score, the easier it is to break into smaller pieces for training or portion control. Hard chews and natural bones are usually not meant to be pre-portioned.
Natural Variation
The higher the score, the more noticeable the natural variation may be in size, thickness, colour, curve, surface, and natural shape.
Natural variation is not a defect. It is part of the product itself.
Chew Profile Disclaimer
Merrimore's profile is a relative comparison of each product's physical characteristics. It is not a safety rating, a nutrition rating, or a guarantee of real chewing time.
Dogs differ in size, age, dental condition, and chewing style.
All chew products should be used under supervision. Choose a size that is not easy to swallow whole, and stop use if the product becomes too small, develops sharp points, cracks, or if the dog tries to swallow large pieces.
Merrimore | Is This Right for My Dog?
Every dog differs in size, dental condition, chewing style, and swallowing habits. Use the guide below to decide whether a product suits your own dog, rather than choosing by body size alone.
All chews should be used under supervision. Puppies, senior dogs, dogs with dental problems, a history of fractured teeth, a tendency to swallow large pieces, or special health or dietary needs should be checked with a veterinarian before use.

Before you buy
This is a natural whole-piece product.
So in a two-piece pack, length, thickness, hoof shape, colour, and bone appearance will not be exactly identical.
Natural whole pieces are not moulded products.
More suitable
Rather than describing it as generally suitable, it is more accurate to say that it may be considered for dogs with previous natural-chew experience, dogs that gnaw gradually, and situations where the owner can supervise throughout.
May not be suitable
- First-time natural bone or hoof users
- Dogs that bite hard on very firm objects
- Dogs that quickly break and swallow
- Dogs with dental problems or a history of fractured teeth
- Puppies or some senior dogs
- Owners looking for a lower-risk treat that does not need supervision
How to use it the first time
- Use it first in an easy-to-clean area.
- Do not place it into the dog's mouth just because the dog does not bite immediately.
- Observe whether the dog sniffs, licks, finds an angle, and gnaws gradually, or bites hard, breaks it quickly, and tries to swallow.
When to remove
- When large bone or hoof pieces have been bitten off
- When sharp edges appear
- When the dog tries to swallow fragments
- When the remaining size becomes too small
- When the chewing style changes from gnawing to forceful crushing
Merrimore Feeding Note
Treats and chews are supplementary foods in addition to a complete and balanced main diet.
In general, treats should make up only a small part of a dog's daily calories. WSAVA suggests keeping treats to about 10% or less of daily calorie intake.
When introducing any new food, offer a small amount first and observe your dog.
Chews should be used under supervision, and the selected size should not be easy to swallow whole.
If your dog has food sensitivities, chronic disease, dental problems, is on a veterinary diet, or has a history of swallowing foreign objects, consult your veterinarian first.
Product Description
Our Goat Leg with Hoof reflects a traditional approach to natural chews. These legs come from goats raised on the grasslands of Mongolia.
Natural drying helps retain the product’s original character while creating a durable chew. The hoof adds a different texture, which many dogs enjoy. As with all natural chews, supervision is recommended and size should be matched to your dog.
Key Features
Why this protein?
Why this protein is chosen
Goat is another less commonly used protein source in the Merrimore range. The current goat products are firmer natural chews.
What to consider
Compare Goat Chews by hardness, natural variation and chewing style rather than protein source alone.
Usage notes
Introduce gradually and select an appropriate size. Supervise chewing sessions.
Usage Insights
Based on product characteristics and usage observations.
Chewing Experience
This natural chew combines firm bone and hoof textures; supervise use and observe how the dog handles each texture.
Natural Aroma
Natural meaty aroma may attract interest quickly; initial sniffing is normal before chewing intensifies.
Indoor Use Consideration
For a cleaner experience, offer on a mat and remove small fragments if your dog tends to break chews into pieces.
This product is a natural bone chew designed to support a dog’s natural chewing behaviour and is not intended for swallowing. If a dog shows signs of rapid consumption, breaks off large pieces, or attempts to swallow, we recommend discontinuing use and selecting a chew more suitable for their eating behaviour.
This type of chew may be considered for dogs living in smaller indoor environments, such as apartments in Hong Kong.
