Merrimore Chew Profile
Every dog chews differently. Our profile is designed to help you compare the physical characteristics of each product before choosing.
Dogs differ in size, dental condition, and chewing style. Merrimore's profile compares products by their physical texture and characteristics so you can choose more easily.
Ratings are for relative comparison between Merrimore products only. They do not represent actual chewing time and do not mean a product is suitable for every dog. All chew products should be used under supervision.
Hardness
Extremely firm natural chew
Chew Duration
Made for gradual scraping and gnawing
Aroma
Mild natural horn aroma
Easy to Portion
Not designed to be broken into portions
Natural Variation
Every horn is naturally different
Good to know
Natural goat horns are not moulded products. Differences in curve, thickness, colour, and length are normal. This is a very firm chew. Before choosing it, consider the dog's dental condition and chewing style rather than body size alone.
How to Read the Merrimore Chew Profile
Hardness
From softer treats to very firm natural chews.
Chew Duration
This reflects the relative amount of chewing a product usually requires, not how many minutes a dog will chew.
Aroma
This reflects the relative strength of the product's natural smell. A stronger smell does not mean better or worse quality.
Easy to Portion
The higher the score, the easier it is to break into smaller pieces for training or portion control. Hard chews and natural bones are usually not meant to be pre-portioned.
Natural Variation
The higher the score, the more noticeable the natural variation may be in size, thickness, colour, curve, surface, and natural shape.
Natural variation is not a defect. It is part of the product itself.
Chew Profile Disclaimer
Merrimore's profile is a relative comparison of each product's physical characteristics. It is not a safety rating, a nutrition rating, or a guarantee of real chewing time.
Dogs differ in size, age, dental condition, and chewing style.
All chew products should be used under supervision. Choose a size that is not easy to swallow whole, and stop use if the product becomes too small, develops sharp points, cracks, or if the dog tries to swallow large pieces.
Merrimore | Is This Right for My Dog?
Every dog differs in size, dental condition, chewing style, and swallowing habits. Use the guide below to decide whether a product suits your own dog, rather than choosing by body size alone.
All chews should be used under supervision. Puppies, senior dogs, dogs with dental problems, a history of fractured teeth, a tendency to swallow large pieces, or special health or dietary needs should be checked with a veterinarian before use.

More suitable
This product should not be recommended in a normal "Suitable for..." way. It should only be considered when the owner already understands hard-chew characteristics and can judge the dog's chewing style. If the dog tends to scrape and gnaw gradually instead of clamping down forcefully, the risk pattern differs from that of a power chewer, but full supervision is still required.
May not be suitable
- First-time hard chew users
- Power chewers
- Dogs that use the back teeth to clamp down forcefully on hard objects
- Puppies
- Senior dogs or dogs with dental problems
- Dogs with a history of fractured teeth
- Situations where supervision is not possible
How to use it the first time
- Do not place it directly into the dog's mouth.
- Put it down and let the dog sniff and lick it first.
- Even a short first session is enough to help the owner see whether the dog scrapes and gnaws or tries to crush it forcefully.
- If the dog tries to crush it forcefully, stop using it.
When to remove
- When cracks or sharp points appear
- When the dog can break off large pieces
- When the size becomes easy to swallow
- When the dog starts impact-style forceful biting
- When any sign of dental discomfort appears
Merrimore Feeding Note
Treats and chews are supplementary foods in addition to a complete and balanced main diet.
In general, treats should make up only a small part of a dog's daily calories. WSAVA suggests keeping treats to about 10% or less of daily calorie intake.
When introducing any new food, offer a small amount first and observe your dog.
Chews should be used under supervision, and the selected size should not be easy to swallow whole.
If your dog has food sensitivities, chronic disease, dental problems, is on a veterinary diet, or has a history of swallowing foreign objects, consult your veterinarian first.

Usage Insights
Based on product characteristics and usage observations.

Goat horn is a very firm natural chew. Previous chew experience and chewing style should be considered before use.
Chew Interest
A brief sniff-and-test phase is common before steady chewing begins, especially for first-time horn chews.
Safety & Supervision
As with any hard chew, supervise use and choose a size appropriate for your dog’s bite strength and chewing style.
This type of chew may be considered for dogs living in smaller indoor environments, such as apartments in Hong Kong.
